How to Play Briscola: Rules & Gameplay

The game begins with the deck being shuffled. Each player receives three cards. A single card is then revealed face-up on the table; this card is the Briscola and determines the trump suit for the entire round. The remaining deck is placed face-down, partially covering the Briscola card. Play proceeds counter-clockwise.

The player to the dealer's right leads the first trick by playing any card. Each player then plays one card in turn. The unique rule in Briscola is that players are not required to follow suit (play a card of the same suit as the lead card). This opens up significant strategic choices.

Winning a trick is determined by two simple rules:

If any trump card (Briscola suit) has been played, the highest-valued trump card wins the trick.
If no trumps were played, the highest card of the initial lead suit wins the trick.

The winner of the trick collects all played cards into a personal point pile and then leads the next trick. Before drawing new cards, players may have the option to exchange the two of trumps for the face-up Briscola card at the game's start. After each trick, players draw a new card from the deck in counter-clockwise order, starting with the trick winner. The final card drawn will be the face-up Briscola.
